The short answer

Eid al-Fitr is the Muslim festival on the 1st of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday 9 March or Wednesday 10 March, depending on the moon. Muslims pay Fitrana before the Eid prayer, pray together, thank Allah and share food and gifts.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr means the festival of breaking the fast. It is a day of thanks to Allah for the strength to complete Ramadan. It is a happy day, and fasting on it is not allowed.

Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims celebrate with prayer, new clothes, good food and visits.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027 in Kenya?

Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 if Ramadan has 29 days, or Wednesday 10 March 2027 if it has 30 days. The date is confirmed after the new moon of Shawwal is sighted.

In Kenya, mosques and Muslim leaders announce Eid after the moon sighting. As with the start of Ramadan, some communities may follow an announcement from another country. Follow your own mosque or community. See Islamic calendar 2027.

What is Fitrana and when should I pay it?

Fitrana, or Zakat al-Fitr, is a small charity that each Muslim who can afford it pays at the end of Ramadan. It is paid for yourself and for each person you support, including children. It purifies the fast and feeds poor families so they can celebrate Eid.

It must be paid before the Eid prayer. Many people pay it in the last days of Ramadan so it reaches families in time. The amount is one saa’ of staple food per person, about 2.5 to 3 kg depending on the food. The cash value in KES is announced every year. Read Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) in Kenya.

What is the Eid prayer and how do I attend?

The Eid prayer is a special prayer of two units (rakahs) prayed in congregation in the morning, after the sun has risen. It is followed by a sermon. In many places it is prayed in a large open ground, and families come together, including women and children.

Scholars differ on whether the Eid prayer is obligatory or strongly recommended, and on some details of how it is prayed. Follow your local imam, and ask your mosque for the prayer time.

How is Eid al-Fitr celebrated in Kenya?

Eid is a day for family and community. In Kenya, people dress in their best clothes, pray in mosques and open grounds, and visit relatives and neighbours. In coastal towns such as Mombasa, and in Nairobi, Garissa and other towns, families cook special meals and share food.

  • Wish each other “Eid Mubarak” (blessed Eid).
  • Visit family, the elderly and neighbours.
  • Share food with people who have little.
  • Give children gifts or small money gifts.

Local dishes and customs differ from region to region, but the spirit is the same: thanks, joy and sharing.

What happens after Eid? The six days of Shawwal

After Eid, many Muslims fast six extra days in Shawwal. This is a voluntary act that the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged. Doing these fasts after Ramadan is like fasting the whole year, as taught in hadith. You can fast them together or spread them through the month. Ask a scholar if you still owe days from Ramadan, as scholars differ on the order.
