The short answer

Ramadan 2027 (1448 AH) is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, after the moon is sighted on the evening of Sunday 7 February. It will last 29 or 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March or Wednesday 10 March 2027. The final dates depend on the local moon sighting.

When does Ramadan 2027 start and end in Kenya?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so Ramadan moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it falls in February and March.

These dates are expected dates based on astronomical calculations and published Islamic calendars. The actual start is confirmed by moon sighting, so it can move by one day.

How is the start of Ramadan decided in Kenya?

The Islamic month begins when the new crescent moon is seen after sunset on the 29th day of the previous month. If the moon is not seen, the month before is completed at 30 days and Ramadan starts the next day.

In Kenya, Muslim leaders and moon-sighting committees watch for the moon and make an announcement. Some communities follow the announcement made in another country, such as Saudi Arabia, so neighbouring mosques may sometimes start the fast on different days. If this happens, follow the guidance of your own mosque or community leaders.

How long is the fast in Kenya?

The fast runs from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). Kenya sits on the equator, so the length of the day hardly changes through the year. In Nairobi, Mombasa and Garissa the fast is about 13 hours every day of Ramadan 2027.

Exact Fajr and Maghrib times differ a little between towns. For the correct times in your town, use the timetable of your local mosque.

When is Laylat al-Qadr in 2027?

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, is the night the Qur’an was first revealed. It is better than a thousand months. Muslims look for it in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.

Odd nights of the last ten days (expected dates)
Odd night of RamadanBegins at sunset on

27th nightFriday, 5 March 2027
29th nightSunday, 7 March 2027

Each night begins at sunset, so the night of the 27th begins on the evening before the 27th day. If Ramadan starts a day later, move every date one day later.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027 in Kenya?

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 if Ramadan has 29 days, or Wednesday 10 March 2027 if it has 30 days. It is confirmed after the new moon of Shawwal is sighted.

Before the Eid prayer, every Muslim who can afford it pays Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) for themselves and for those they support.

How can I prepare for Ramadan 2027?

There are still four months to go. Starting early makes the month calmer. Here is a simple checklist:

  • Make up missed fasts. If you owe fasts from last Ramadan, complete them before February.
  • Plan your Zakat. Many people pay their Zakat in Ramadan. Choose your Zakat date and work out what you owe.
  • Set your Sadaqah budget. Decide what you will give each day or week, especially in the last ten nights.
  • Build the habit of Qur’an. Start reading a little each day now.
  • Plan your meals. Prepare a simple suhoor and iftar plan and stock up on staples early.
  • Plan Fitrana. Remember to pay it before the Eid prayer.
