What is Zakat?

Zakat comes from the Arabic root meaning purification and growth. Giving Zakat purifies your wealth and heart, reduces greed, and supports those in need. It is both a spiritual duty and a social responsibility.

As a compulsory pillar of Islam, Zakat ensures wealth circulates fairly, helping the most vulnerable maintain dignity. It is a system of social justice, not mere charity.

What is Nisab?

Zakat is due once your wealth surpasses the Nisab threshold and remains in your possession for a full lunar year (Hawl). The standard rate is 2.5% on eligible assets such as cash, savings, gold, silver and business assets.

The Nisab is measured in gold or silver: 87.28 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. The Nisab value is updated regularly based on current gold and silver prices, converted to KES.

Why Give Your Zakat to Islamic Relief Kenya?

Islamic Relief Kenya treats your Zakat as an amanah (trust) to those in need, to you, and above all, to Allah (SWT).

Zakat: A Sacred Pillar

Zakat reduces inequality, supports the poor and strengthens communities. Through it, wealth circulates to those who struggle with basic needs, giving relief, stability and hope.

At Islamic Relief Kenya, we use your Zakat effectively to relieve suffering and support the country’s most vulnerable families because your Zakat is their right.

“And be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity: And whatever good you send forth for your souls before you, ye shall find it with Allah.”

Qur’an 2:110
