The short answer

Sha’ban is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar, the month before Ramadan. Sha’ban 1448 is expected to run from 9 January to 7 February 2027. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted more in Sha’ban than in other months outside Ramadan, so many Muslims fast often in it and prepare for Ramadan.

When is Sha’ban 2027?

Sha’ban 1448 is expected to begin on 9 January 2027 and end on 7 February 2027, so it is the month just before Ramadan 2027. A second Sha’ban, 1449, is expected to begin on 29 December 2027. Moon sighting decides the real start, so all dates are expected and can move by a day.

In Kenya the moon is looked for on the evening of the 29th of Sha’ban, and local mosques and Muslim councils announce the result. If the moon is not seen, Sha’ban completes 30 days. Read when Ramadan 2027 starts in Kenya.

What is Sha’ban in the Islamic calendar?

Sha’ban is the eighth of the twelve Islamic months. It comes after Rajab and before Ramadan. It lasts 29 or 30 days. It is not one of the four sacred months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah).

The name is often linked to the idea of “spreading out” or “separating”, but explanations differ, so treat the meaning as uncertain. See all months on the Islamic months page.

Why is Sha’ban important?

Sha’ban is important because it is the doorway to Ramadan. It is reported that Aisha, the Prophet’s wife, said she never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha’ban, other than Ramadan. This is a well known report in the collections of Bukhari and Muslim.

Because of this, Muslims often use Sha’ban to practise the habits of Ramadan: fasting, reading the Qur’an, praying at night and giving. Starting early makes Ramadan feel easier.

What events happen in Sha’ban?

Sha’ban has no festival that all Muslims agree on. The main day people ask about is the 15th of Sha’ban, called by some communities Shab-e-Barat or Laylat al-Bara’ah. It is expected on 23 January 2027.

Scholars differ on this night. Some believe that it has a special virtue and spend it in prayer. Others hold that there is no firm evidence for singling it out for special rituals. Both groups agree that Muslims should not neglect obligatory acts and should avoid sin. Please follow the guidance of a trusted scholar or imam. Many scholars also allow the usual fast on the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month, including Sha’ban.

The other key moment is the moon sighting for Ramadan on the evening of 29 Sha’ban, expected on 6 February 2027.

What can Muslims do in Sha’ban to prepare for Ramadan?

These simple steps are open to everyone.

  • Fast extra days. Follow the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) example by fasting some days, such as Mondays and Thursdays. Do not overdo it if you are weak.
  • Make up missed Ramadan fasts. Aisha is reported to have made up her missed days in Sha’ban. Finish yours before the next Ramadan begins. See Fidya and Kaffarah if you cannot fast.
  • Read the Qur’an daily. Set a target you can keep.
  • Fix your prayers. Pray on time so Taraweeh is easier later.
  • Settle debts and heal relationships. Enter Ramadan with a clear heart.
  • Plan your giving. Decide your Zakat date and your Ramadan budget. Read Ramadan for beginners.

Some scholars advise against starting a new fast right after the middle of Sha’ban if you do not usually fast, and others do not. If this affects you, ask your scholar.
