What is Safar in the Islamic calendar?

Safar is the second month of the Hijri calendar. It comes after Muharram and before Rabi al-Awwal. Like all Islamic months, it begins with the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days.

Safar is not one of the four sacred months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah). Explanations of the origin of its name differ among scholars, so this page does not give one.

Why is Safar important?

Safar has no special virtue set out in the Qur’an or in well-established hadith. It is an ordinary month, and that is the main point to know about it.

Every month, a Muslim has the same duties: the five daily prayers, Zakat when due, honesty in dealings and kindness to family and neighbours. Good deeds done regularly are loved by Allah, even if they are small. Safar is a fine chance to keep these habits steady after the new year.

If you want a simple plan, pick one prayer habit, one act of giving and one act of learning, and keep all three through the month. Small steps that you can sustain are better than a large plan that you drop after a week. Ask a family member or friend to join you so that you encourage each other.

Is Safar an unlucky month?

No. Islam teaches that no month or day brings bad luck. Some people in different parts of the world believe Safar brings misfortune, and so they avoid travel, weddings or new work in it. This idea is older than Islam.

It is well known that the Prophet (peace be upon him) rejected belief in bad omens. Muslims put their trust in Allah, make sensible plans and are not ruled by fear of a date. If you have worries about a decision, pray, ask advice from people with knowledge and then go ahead with trust in Allah.

What events happen in Safar?

There are no fixed religious days, fasts or festivals in Safar. Some communities mark particular days with customs, such as the last Wednesday of the month. Scholars differ on whether such customs have a basis, so ask a trusted scholar or your local imam rather than follow a custom you do not understand.

What can Muslims do in Safar?

Do what you would do in any month, with consistency.

  • Keep the five daily prayers on time.
  • Fast voluntarily on Mondays and Thursdays or on the white days (the 13th, 14th and 15th of the month) if you can.
  • Give Sadaqah regularly, even a small amount.
  • Read some Qur’an daily and make dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
  • Mend ties with relatives and friends.

Avoid inventing special prayers or rituals for Safar. Stay with what is clearly taught.

How should Muslims in Kenya treat Safar?

Treat Safar like any other month. Weddings, travel, business and building work can go ahead as normal. Customs about Safar differ between communities, and some of them mix culture with religion.

A simple test helps. Ask whether a practice comes from the Qur’an and the clear teaching of the Prophet (peace be upon him). If you are not sure, ask a trusted scholar or imam before you follow it. Do not spend money or time on rituals you cannot explain.

Does the word Safar have another meaning?

Yes. In Arabic, the word safar is also used for travel. Scholars give different explanations for why the month got its name, and some links to travel or to old Arabic customs are reported. As these explanations are not settled, this page does not rely on any one of them.

What matters is the teaching: a month does not bring harm or good by itself. Benefit and harm are in the hands of Allah alone.
