What is Rabi al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar?
Rabi al-Awwal is the third of the 12 Islamic months. It comes after Safar and before Rabi al-Thani. The name is often explained as "the first spring", but explanations of Arabic month names differ, so treat that as a common view only.
Rabi al-Awwal is not one of the four sacred months. The sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah.
Why is Rabi al-Awwal important?
Rabi al-Awwal is important because of three events in the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Muslim historians agree that he was born, arrived in Madinah after the Hijrah and passed away in this month.
The month itself has no special acts of worship set for it. Its importance is the chance to learn and reflect on the Prophet’s life, his character and his message of mercy. Love for him is shown most of all by following his teaching.
For many Muslims in Kenya, the month is also a time when mosques, madrasas and families hold talks about his life. Whatever you choose to attend, the core lessons are the same: be truthful, be gentle, keep your promises and care for people in need.
What events happen in Rabi al-Awwal?
Key events are linked to the month, but scholars and historians differ on the exact days.
- The Prophet’s birth. He was born in Makkah, on a Monday, in Rabi al-Awwal. The 12th is the most commonly cited date, but some scholars give other dates.
- The arrival in Madinah. After the Hijrah from Makkah, the Prophet reached the Madinah area in Rabi al-Awwal.
- His passing. He passed away in Madinah in Rabi al-Awwal, in the 11th year after the Hijrah. The 12th is often given for this day too.
The 12th of Rabi al-Awwal 1449 is expected about 14 August 2027.
What can Muslims do in Rabi al-Awwal?
Muslims can do the same good deeds as in any month, with a focus on learning about the Prophet (peace be upon him).
- Study his life (Seerah). Read a good book or listen to lessons, and teach children.
- Send blessings on him. Say "Allahumma salli ala Muhammad" often.
- Fast on Mondays. It is reported that when asked about fasting on Monday, the Prophet said it was the day he was born.
- Give Sadaqah and be kind to family, neighbours and the poor.
Many communities hold gatherings called Mawlid (or Milad) on the 12th. Scholars differ on whether it is permitted or recommended, and Sunni schools and scholars have different views. This page takes no side. Follow the guidance of a trusted scholar or your local imam.
How can I learn about the Prophet’s life this month?
You do not need a special event. Start small and keep going.
- Read a short, trusted biography (Seerah) and finish a few pages each day.
- Learn his manners: honesty, patience, mercy to children, kindness to neighbours and the poor.
- Teach children simple stories from his life, such as his kindness to everyone and his care for orphans.
- Ask your local mosque whether it offers Seerah classes, in person or online.
The Qur’an describes him as a mercy to all the worlds (Qur’an 21:107). Following his example in daily life is the surest way to honour him.
What happened in the Hijrah and why does it matter?
The Hijrah was the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) migration from Makkah to Madinah, after years of hardship. He arrived in the Madinah area in Rabi al-Awwal, where the first Muslim community was built. His new neighbours welcomed the migrants and shared what they had.
That spirit of sharing is a lesson for today. Many Kenyan families have also been forced to leave home because of drought, floods or conflict, so it is a good month to remember people on the move. The Islamic calendar counts its years from the Hijrah, although the year itself starts in Muharram.
