Muharram is the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar and a sacred month in which fighting was forbidden. Muharram 1449 is expected to begin about 6 June 2027, and Ashura (the 10th day) about 15 June 2027. Muslims are encouraged to fast on Ashura and the day before, and to give charity. Moon sighting decides the final dates.
When is Muharram 2027 in Kenya?
Muharram 1449 is expected to start about Sunday 6 June 2027, the day after the new moon is sighted. It runs for 29 or 30 days. Muharram 1448 already ended in July 2026.
| Occurrence | Starts (expected) | Ends (expected) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muharram 1448 (past) | 16 June 2026 | 14 July 2026 | Already finished |
| Muharram 1449 | About Sunday 6 June 2027 | About Sunday 4 July 2027 | Next occurrence. 29 or 30 days |
| Ashura 1449 (10 Muharram) | About Tuesday 15 June 2027 | Same day | Fast the 9th (Monday 14 June) as well |
These dates are calculated in advance. In Kenya, the moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th day of the previous month, so the start can shift by one day. Dates far ahead are less certain. Follow your local mosque or the national announcement. See the full Islamic calendar 2027.
What is Muharram in the Islamic calendar?
Muharram is the first of the 12 months of the Islamic calendar, which is also called the Hijri calendar. The calendar is lunar, so each month begins with the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so Muharram moves earlier through the seasons each year.
The word Muharram means "forbidden" or "made sacred". It is one of the four sacred months, along with Rajab, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah. The Qur’an says that twelve months were set by Allah and that four of them are sacred (Qur’an 9:36). The next month is Safar.
Why is Muharram important?
Muharram matters because it is a sacred month and because it holds the day of Ashura. In a well-known narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) called fasting in Muharram the best fasting after Ramadan.
Sacred months are a time when Muslims are urged to avoid wrongdoing and to do more good. The Qur’an tells believers not to wrong themselves in these months (Qur’an 9:36).
Muharram is also the month the Islamic year begins. The calendar counts from the Hijrah, the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah. The Companions chose to start the year at Muharram during the time of Caliph Umar. The New Year is not a festival in Islam, and no special prayer or ritual is prescribed for it.
What events happen in Muharram?
The main days are the Islamic New Year and Ashura. Here are the expected dates for 1449.
| Day | Expected date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Muharram | About 6 June 2027 | Islamic New Year 1449 |
| 9 Muharram (Tasu’a) | About 14 June 2027 | Recommended to fast with Ashura |
| 10 Muharram (Ashura) | About 15 June 2027 | Recommended fast |
Ashura is the 10th of Muharram. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) found the Jews of Madinah fasting on this day because Allah saved Musa (Moses) and his people from Pharaoh. He said that Muslims are closer to Musa and told his followers to fast. Later he said he would fast the 9th as well, so that the fast would differ from others.
What can Muslims do in Muharram?
The best-known act is voluntary fasting. Other acts are good in every month but are especially welcome in a sacred month.
- Fast Ashura. Fast the 10th, and the 9th as well if you can. It is reported that fasting Ashura wipes away the minor wrongs of the previous year. This is a voluntary fast, not an obligation.
- Fast other days. Extra fasting in Muharram is encouraged, for example Mondays and Thursdays.
- Give Sadaqah. Give regularly, even if small.
- Make dhikr and read the Qur’an. Remember Allah often and keep a daily reading.
- Make a plan. The new year is a good time to set simple goals, such as praying on time or paying any debts.
Some communities hold gatherings or mourning customs in Muharram. Scholars and communities differ on these practices, and they are not part of this page. Follow the guidance of a trusted scholar or your local imam.
How does the Hijri calendar work?
The Hijri calendar follows the moon. A month begins when the new crescent is sighted and has 29 or 30 days, so a year has 354 or 355 days. That is why Islamic dates move about 10 to 11 days earlier against the usual calendar each year, and why Muharram falls in a different season over time.
In Kenya, many mosques and councils announce the start of each month after the moon is looked for on the evening of the 29th. Some people follow calculations, and some follow sightings in other countries. If you are unsure which to follow, ask your local mosque. Year 1 of the calendar is the year of the Hijrah, which is why dates are written AH (after Hijrah). Read more in Islamic calendar 2027.
How do I plan the Ashura fast?
Plan it a few days ahead, just as you would for any voluntary fast. Fasting is from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). In Kenya that is about 13 hours, because the country is on the equator.
- Decide to fast the 9th and 10th, which are expected about Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 June 2027.
- Eat a light meal before dawn (suhoor) and break the fast at sunset with dates and water.
- Do not fast if you are sick, travelling with hardship or a woman with monthly bleeding. Ask a scholar if you are unsure.
- If you still owe fasts from Ramadan, scholars differ on whether to complete them first, so ask a scholar about your case.
How can I give charity in Muharram with Islamic Relief Kenya?
