The short answer

Jumada al-Awwal is the fifth month of the Islamic calendar. In 1448 AH it is expected to run from 12 October to 10 November 2026, and in 1449 AH from 1 October to 30 October 2027. It is not a sacred month and has no special rituals. Muslims use it like any other month: pray, give charity and do regular good deeds.

When is Jumada al-Awwal 2027?

In 2027 Jumada al-Awwal 1449 is expected to begin on 1 October. The nearer one, Jumada al-Awwal 1448, is expected to start on 12 October 2026, so it is almost here. The Islamic month starts only when the new moon is sighted, so each date below is expected and can move by one day.

In Kenya the new moon is usually checked on the evening of the 29th day of the month before. Local mosques and Muslim councils announce the result. Dates for later years are less certain than dates close to today. See the full Islamic calendar 2027.

What is Jumada al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar?

Jumada al-Awwal is the fifth of the twelve Islamic months. It comes after Rabi al-Thani and before Jumada al-Thani. The name means “the first Jumada”, and the next month is “the second Jumada”.

The Islamic year follows the moon, so each month lasts 29 or 30 days and the year is about 11 days shorter than the common 365-day year. This is why Jumada al-Awwal falls in a different season each few years. It is not one of the four sacred months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah). See all the months on the Islamic months page.

Why is Jumada al-Awwal important?

Honestly, Jumada al-Awwal has no special virtue that is widely agreed from the Qur’an or the Sunnah. There is no fast, prayer or festival tied to it. Muslims should be careful not to invent special acts for a month.

That does not make it a lost month. Allah is worshipped in every month, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said that the deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if small. A quiet month like this one is a good time to build habits you can keep.

What events happen in Jumada al-Awwal?

There are no major Islamic holidays or fixed days of worship in Jumada al-Awwal. Historians mention events from early Islamic history in this month, but there is no ritual attached to them and the dates are not a matter of worship.

The nearest key days around it are these (all expected):

  • Rajab, a sacred month, begins about 10 December 2026.
  • Ramadan 1448 begins about 8 February 2027.
  • Eid al-Fitr is expected on 9 or 10 March 2027.

Use the time to prepare for the big months ahead. Read Ramadan for beginners if you want a simple start.

What can Muslims do in Jumada al-Awwal?

Do what Muslims should do in every month. These acts have a clear basis in Islam.

  • Keep the five daily prayers on time, and pray in congregation if you can.
  • Read some Qur’an every day. A small daily amount is better than a big amount once a month.
  • Remember Allah (dhikr). Say phrases such as “SubhanAllah”, “Alhamdulillah” and “Allahu Akbar” and seek forgiveness.
  • Fast voluntarily. Many Muslims fast on Mondays and Thursdays, and on the 13th, 14th and 15th of each Islamic month (the “white days”).
  • Give regularly. Even a small gift each week is Sadaqah. Read about Sadaqah in Islam.
  • Make up missed fasts from the last Ramadan if you still owe any.

Some communities hold gatherings or special prayers in particular months. Scholars differ on many of these practices. Follow the guidance of a trusted local scholar or imam.
