Children in Mandera and Kilifi Counties face barriers to learning, including long distances to school, limited infrastructure, and scarce teaching materials. For girls, challenges are compounded by early marriage, family responsibilities, and stigma around menstrual health.
Through the Development through Livelihoods, Empowerment and Resilience Support (DELIVERS) project, supported by Islamic Relief Canada, Islamic Relief Kenya is supporting schools to create safer, more inclusive learning environments. Eight classrooms, ventilated latrines, desks, ICT equipment, and dignity kits have been provided to four schools in Mandera and Kilifi Counties.
Infrastructure Development and ICT in Kilifi
Sirini Primary School faced overcrowding, inadequate classrooms, and unhygienic latrines. Some students studied in shifts or under trees, while the library was dark and worn out. Islamic Relief Kenya constructed two classrooms and a two-door latrine, reducing congestion and enabling full-time learning.
“The construction of these classrooms has improved our capacity to attract new students. Previously, classes were held under trees and were often interrupted by rain. Now learning continues smoothly no matter the weather,” said Mr. Choga, Sirini Primary School Headteacher.
The library was also renovated and equipped with computers, Wi-Fi, a printer, new furniture, and solar lighting, allowing students to gain practical ICT skills and teachers to prepare lessons more efficiently.
“Previously, ICT was merely theoretical. Now, our students are gaining practical skills that the Competency-Based Curriculum requires,” said Mr. Choga.
Mentorship and Student Support
105 girls from Tunzanani and Sirini Primary Schools attended mentorship sessions on life skills, menstrual health, peer pressure, and mental well-being. Awareness campaigns on child protection among guardians complemented the mentorship sessions.
“Before the support of Islamic Relief, we used to learn in the library, which was dark, crowded and leaking. We have since moved to new classrooms that are brighter, more spacious, and better for learning. As girls, we also received dignity kits and learned about self-care, mental health, and how to report abuse. We feel better equipped to handle challenges and stay in school,” shared a student.
Strengthening School Governance
School Boards of Management (BoMs) also received training on oversight, infrastructure maintenance, project management, and safeguarding. Sirini Primary School’s BoM now identifies issues early, collaborates with teachers, and supports students at risk of dropping out.
“Early pregnancies, drug abuse, and child labour previously caused many students to drop out. After the training, girls now understand their rights and can discuss challenges openly. We have already followed up on several cases, helping children return to school,” said Serah Kapombe, BoM Member.
Through classroom construction, ICT access, mentorship, and governance training, Islamic Relief Kenya is transforming learning environments in Mandera and Kilifi, helping children thrive academically and socially.
