Aqiqah involves the sacrifice of livestock — goats or sheep — on behalf of a newborn child. For a baby boy, two animals are sacrificed. For a baby girl, one animal is sacrificed. It is traditionally performed on the seventh day after birth, though it can be carried out later if circumstances require.
It is also Sunnah to shave the baby’s head and give charity equal to the weight of the hair in silver to those in need.
