As northern Kenya faces a worsening drought, Islamic Relief Kenya has launched the Wajir Emergency Response Support Project (WERP) to support communities struggling to cope with prolonged dry conditions. Launched in January 2026, the project will run for six months, reaching 600 families with critical food supplies to address immediate hunger and clean water, which have become increasingly scarce in arid regions.
This support represents the initial phase of the response, while Islamic Relief Kenya continues global and national fundraising efforts to reach more families affected by the drought.
Growing Needs Amid Climate Extremes
Kenya has received unusually low rainfall over the past seasons, particularly between October and December 2025, when many areas received rainfalls far below long-term averages. These conditions have driven an escalating food and water crisis in dryland counties such as Wajir, Mandera, Turkana, and Garissa. An estimated over two million people nationwide are now vulnerable to food insecurity, with that figure expected to rise if climatic conditions persist.
Pastoralist communities in the arid regions have seen water sources dry up and livestock perish, worsening food insecurity and leaving many families in a vulnerable state. The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has labeled the situation “alarming,” emphasizing that families’ capacity to cope is being stretched to the limit.
Lives on the Line
Pastoralist families in Wajir are losing livestock, the primary source of income and food. With water sources drying up, many families are facing hunger and health risks.

Our team is committed to providing immediate relief while mobilizing resources and partnerships to scale up our support.
